Migrant Terminologies I

Here at Balik sa Bayan PH, we aim to facilitate conversations about migrants and issues of migration. But what is a migrant? We hear terminologies thrown around a lot, but many of us don’t really know what it means!

The concept of a migrant is a broad term, utilized to describe individuals residing outside of their own country of origin. This may be due to varying reasons, from education and work to a general atmosphere of hostility.

Two other terms that appear frequently with the topic of migration are refugees and asylum-seekers. Both are individuals who leave their country of origin for the specific reason of the existence of persecution, or the probable existence of such, or directed human rights violations that would endanger one’s well-being and livelihood. What’s their main difference? Asylum seekers are still subject to the review and approval of the claims presented to the proper governing authorities concerning their situation are thus not entitled to international refugee protection. This is because the danger in their situation is still potential, and not yet fully recognized by designated authorities.
